Isolating the motor fixed my surface finish issues 100%. While the Baldor motor improved the surface finish issues somewhat it was the isolation mounts that really did the trick. This time since I needed to make a custom motor mount for the G0709 to accommodate the isolation mounts I went ahead and upgraded the motor too since the motor frames/bolt patterns are different. The Baldor also uses 6 isolation mounts vs 4.That is good to know. I have a co-worker who makes weekly trips out east to visit our work sites. I could see if she could haul a motor out here for me and save me a trip. Have you considered going to 3 phase with a vfd or has upgrading motors and isolating taken care of all things evil in Grizzly metal working machines?

I discussed variable speed with my brother. Either buying a variable speed lathe outright or converting to a 3ph motor and VFD. He has owned several industrial CNC lathes. His last lathe before he sold his business was a $250,000 Mori so he's got lathe chops to the nines.
Surprisingly, he didn't find the need to vary spindle speed that much and never really went over 2,000 rpm. As the G0709 has 8 speeds out of the crate he felt that would probably meet my needs. That left me more budget for chucks and tooling.
