What Did You Buy Today?

Help somebody: I can’t find my copy of “THE SIGN!”
OK. I'll add fuel...

Zeroed the arbor on the grinding indexer to check for runout. With 1/8" in the chuck there is .0003" TIR. With 3/16" in there .0001" TIR...
I'm going to stop looking at this now, It's probably going down hill if I look any closer....

Guessing this sort of stuff is why they're so expensive. I might be afraid to use it!

Bought two 18x24 surface plates for $60 USD at auction. I think they went cheap (for where I live) because they were described as "granite blocks". No name plates on either.

The one of the right seems to be in excellent condition. Probably because the other plate was kept on top.

The one on the left has me confused. The assumed top is rough and has cutting groves like when it was cut from the larger slab. The underside the surface is smooth, but has groves cut into the plate. Maybe it was never a surface plate to begin with I don't know.

They both got a bath! And I'm happy with my purchase

If anyone has any idea about the groves, I'd like to here it.

I'm betting it's a jigging plate, and the grooves are the top. The hole maybe for a rod, does that insert have threads?
The bottom roughness is of no consequence if it sits on three points of contact. It can be easily leveled.

Just guessing.

There was a female flare fitting on the bottom, and the hole does have a threaded insert.

The grooves and the threaded metal fitting make me think it was a plane fluid bearing. A fluid would be plumbed into the fitting, under pressure and distributed by the grooves, to facilitate very low resistance freedom of movement (2 dimensional sliding). The pressurized fluid would "lift" the top plate allowing it to essentially "float" on a layer of the fluid. The fluid might be air, water, oil or ???
If the setup was a fluid bearing, I would expect the faying surfaces are pretty flat.

However, they are not surface plates for metrology until they are properly supported and calibrated.

That's a lot of inserts! Especially parting inserts. I've only used HSS blades for parting. Are the carbide parting inserts that good? Do you part stainless steel? That's the only material that has ever given me grief, everything else just cuts. It seems you ought to be set for a while with inserts.

I've never experienced having to pay for the insert boxes, wow, things are different across the pond.

I buy bulk precisely so they DO last a while. This little lot will last me quite a time. Makes sense to have it on-hand when I need it, than have to wait around on a specific insert type to finish a job. Been there, done that, not doing it again. Once was enough.

As for the stainless inserts, I find they hold up better to non-stainless steels as well as other materials better.

Found that the Aluminium inserts (CCGT et-al) are excellent with silver steel and the Stainless inserts are great on plastics.

Parting stainless... Never had any problems with that. Normal steels? different story!

As for the boxes... That is a concious choice to buy white boxes. I separate my inserts into Red / White /Blue boxes depending on what the insert type is. Normal inserts (CCMT et-al) go into white boxes, Aluminium inserts (CCGT et-al) go in blue boxes, Stainless inserts go in red boxes. Makes it easier "at-a-glance" in the drawer to see which are which.

Good idea on the color coding.
