1236T CCMT vs CNMG?

I'm glad that his conversation proved (and continues to prove) fruitful. The group saved me a lot of foreseeable frustration with CNMG. Thank you to a great group.

CNMG inserts for AL actually have a positive rake and good chip breaker. They work fine with most steels. i use these on my 10EE and Leblond
I've actually had good luck with CNMG for aluminum on cast iron on my 14" and bigger lathes. I tried it on a whim (just happened to be handy) and was surprised how well it works. I found that for facing and adapter plate they work really well when starting at the center and facing outwards...makes a bigger, fatter, somewhat flat chip rather than the tiny pieces of dust you normally get. I still lock the carriage and make finish passes from out to in, but as a roughing technique the other method is a lot cleaner.

The same type of inserts, negative rake with positive cutting edge, are available for WNMG shape. I don't usually buy off-brand inserts on eBay, but these have performed very well, even in 303 and 316 stainless. Very sharp with a deep chip breaker pocket which creates the positive cutting face. This is another excellent choice and one of my favorites that lasts longer than the eBay off-brand type.
