What Did You Buy Today?

I was having a conversation with @tjb the other day about surface grinder wheels. He was asking what wheel I was running on my Brown & Sharpe...

Idk... I've been using the wheel that was on it when I bought it... so I removed the wheel guard to see if I could get some numbers off the wheel. Nope, they are covered by the adapter... but this is what I found...

What kind of adapter uses a gear to retain the wheel? I've never seen anything like that...

After doing a little research, I determined that this is a 'glare gear' setup, manufactured by Sopko... it takes a special wrench that engages the gear teeth and one hole in the washer. It's designed to allow wheel changes without using any type of impact on the spindle.

Today the brown truck brought me this...

I had to buy the full three piece set to get the wrench... MSC carries it.

This is just another one of those things that I desperately needed and didn't even know it... I guess...

I am sorry but, I don’t see how the splines on that wrench are going to help you with that gear nut.

Whatever the wheel is what does show in the pic looks like a Norton Abrasives logo.

Magnett ,Why wouldn't the splined wrench work the retainer has two holes that recieves the T wrench pin and the teeth should be engaged . Maybe I am missing something looks like it should work just fine.

I've never seen this system before but I suspect the pin on the wrench engages the hole in the washer so the spline teeth can engage the gear teeth to rotate the gear relative to the washer. Rotating the wrench tightens or loosens the gear nut. Minimal force is exerted on the shaft! Nifty idea.

This is exactly how it works... the washer with the holes is keyed to the adapter... the splines turn the nut.

IOWs... it works just like a Jacobs chuck key...

Very interesting method. I like it. Less chance to ruin the wheels and spindle from vibration from any impact method…very cool.
