What Did You Buy Today?

With the steady rest.... Might want to look at the brass tips. Either smooth them out, or replace them with..... Yup, you guessed it, either delrin or roller bearings. Currently working on that particular issue with mine, then I will tackle modifying the foot so that I can use it. Will see if I can do the milling with the milling slide since the steady rest is an aluminium casting, or so it would seem. There are also a couple of other "mods" I would like to make too. Will have to see about a thread about it when I get around to it.

Yes, the "Factory" fixed rest is awful. Yes I have one and yes, I have used it. Once. On a small job. Wish I had not bothered, it was nothing but a pain in the rear end. The "following" steady is just as bad, but I intend to use it as a base for a modified rest.

The bigger fixed steady proved far more useful for the fact it can be opened. The one you have was purchased already modified as a test to see if it would work out. It did, so I purchased an un-modified one that I can do myself.

I just bought a used Logan lathe that has a lot of stuff with it, but of course, not everything. The live center that came with is frozen up, so I ordered and received a Shars MT2 live center yesterday. Then I realized it doesn't have a dead center with it for the other end, so I need to get one of those on order, too.
I also ordered 3 AXA tool holders so I can set up some tooling. The lathe came with one standard tool holder (also a knurling holder, a cut off holder and a boring bar holder). I got a couple boxes of various HSS bits, so I need to practice grinding some bits.

Yep, I reckon some small roller bearings would be nice.

The "Factory" fixed rest is like something made by someone ****** out of their head at the end of a long shift, whilst balancing on a trampoline!

Okay, it was on Saturday, but close enough. I bought two basket case Clausing 6903s. One is missing the tailstock, one is missing the variable speed motor sheaves, but they both have taper attachments and are mostly all there. I put power to both motors last night...one trips the breaker pretty quickly after coming up to speed, but runs quiet while the other runs, but has a very noisy front bearing. I opened up the headstocks and gearboxes and everything looks and moves okay, but I think these are likely just parts machines. I actually have a Clausing 6913 in somewhat similar condition that's being brought to me in a couple of weeks. I'm hoping I might be able to make one complete machine out of the three and sell off the rest of the parts. This is while I'm working on another 6903 that is essentially complete minus a few small things I have yet to fix...no wonder my wife thinks I'm a little crazy!

Sorry for the cluttered photos...the storage area of my shop is in complete disarray as I'm moving things around to reconfigure where things are.

The previous purchases haven’t yet made their way to Finland, but this didn’t stop me from making more

I got these sweet Ideal Industries 35-426 7” tongue & groove pliers. The special edition Reflex Super T-Stripper wire strippers were unfortunately out of stock :apologize:
