What Did You Buy Today?

For a non-ball bearing nut, the recommended torque for ER-40 is about 100 foot-lbs! I don't torque to that value, but if I get a slip, I really crank on it. I bought the longest ER40 wrenches I could find, most are ridiculously too short to generate the required torque. You'd need to apply 200 lbs of force to tighten 6" wrenches. That's not something I can comfortably and repeatedly do. If you don't tighten them properly they may not center fully, which somewhat negates the purpose of a collet chuck.

On my ER32 chuck (mini-lathe) I use an ER32 wrench and a tommy bar. For my ER40, I use a regular collet nut wrench plus a modified wrench with pins to insert into features on my set tru chuck. I simply bought two long wrenches and modified one of them.

Yeah my favorite crescent just barely won't open far enough so I have to use my giant tractor crescent wrench. Ordered a 40mm open end wrench online God its bigger than the tractor wrench. I'm thinking about just cutting off the box end.
it's an easy mod, if I remember I just made the last tooth near the anvil into a tooth shape, instead of a stop shape.

I answered a c-list ad this morning... it was only about 30 minutes from the house. There was 5 toolboxes loaded with machinist tools, mechanic tools, gunparts, and a LOT of other 'stuff'... some of which I don't even know what it is.

I really don't know what all is here... some of it is junk, some of it will likely be up for sale. I'll probably have some 'what is this' questions. I'll start sorting through it this afternoon.

OK, Bear: How Much?

@GrifterGuru – Don't look at the photos: many are very painful (like the piles of files, metrology dumped in drawers and the DTI mounted on an Indicol just waiting for the tip to get whacked). Oh, I guess if you got this far you already saw the photos . . .

I’ll be honest, I had to look that up on YouTube, but the bearing nut does look cool. I may have to purchase that in the future. I did pick up a full ring spanned as well.
As @GrifterGuru said, they make a world of difference. The guy I got mine from on eBay doesn't appear to be making them anymore, but just search Ball Bearing ER Collet nut and you'll find a number of them; just make sure you get ones that are all steel, no brass.

Didn't buy (yesterday was trash day and I was out early on the daily walk):

88mm x 13.5mm OD x 12.5mm ID (-ish) steel tubes with a smooth matte powder coat (maybe):

Probably too much... but there is enough here to make me feel ok with it... lol!

Look what I found in the top of one of the boxes...

I wasn't expecting that... yes, it's almost full.

Well that is not scary, no, not at all, it is bloody frightening!

Is that self amalgamating tape on there around the lid to act as a seal?

Ok, who can tell me what these are for?

Yes, I already know... and no, they aren't files...
