If you partially loosen the four hex-head nuts that secure the J-Head to the knuckle, you can tug the J-head away from the knuckle just enough that it will be free from the worm gear that is used to tilt the head side-to-side. Then you can rotate it further upside down and bring the knee upward so the J-head rests on the XY table and knee. Once. you have it supported on the table/knee, you can then remove the 4 nuts and get a look at whether you have damaged the worm shaft or the pinion gear casting (or both).

It meshes against the pinion (red arrow) on the knuckle but it not captivated by it once the head is pulled away.
