Looks like a D1-6 cam lock spindle. Turn the square drive cams counter clockwise behind the chuck. There should be 6 of them. There should be markings. 12:00 is unlocked. Between 3:00 & 6:00 is locked.

Do you have a tag on the back showing country of origin?
Lacking that, the plate on the motor will offer a clue.
It's a shame someone removed the large sheet metal plates from the front castings.

I haven’t thought about the motor plate but the only identification on the lathe itself is that south bend lathe logo on the front. No model number or anything
Have you gone to vintagemachinery's site and looked up the South Bend full-line product catalogs from the late 1970s through the 1980s? That's where I start when I get a new toy. The South Bend name has been used on import machines for a while, but I bet you'll find it this way.
