Another Internal Combustion Engine

I am a little late with this question since you have used this technique on several flywheels, but how does the taper lock work? Is there a matching taper in the flywheel hub? How do you hit the dimension correctly?

Flywheels look great. How did you decide on 5 spokes?
That's what would fit with a 1/2" width spoke. Thanks Chris

How do you hit the dimension correctly?
I set the compound some where around 5 degrees and it doesn't have be exact. Now don't change the angle until you have cut all the tapers for the flywheels and the lock flange. They come out perfect every time. Thanks Robert

How about the diameter? Does the flange on the bushing rest against the flywheel hub?

No it does not go in that far. It is kind of hard to explain with out pictures but the process is easy once you see it.

Are there others on here that would like me to start a separate thread on that subject?

I spent a lot of time filing around on the flywheels today to get rid of the sharp edges and gave them a good coat of paint.

It is supposed to get down in the 30s tonight so maybe they will freeze dry.

Between coats I polished up the taper faces.

Looks good. How much do they weigh now. Seems like a lot of cast iron now sitting on the shop floor.

Thanks Chris it doesn't always work out.

I made a bunch of chips and I got rid of anything that didn't look like an engine base.
No end mills were harmed in this operation.

I really like the idea of a one piece engine base.
I may use this style more often.

I also cut out and installed the two main bearing caps.

Whoa, that took some time!!
I bet you had a big pile of chips!!

I didn't get any shop time yesterday and it's kind of cold here this morning so I may get out later today.
I haven't weighed the flywheels yet as I wanted to wait until after they were painted.

Yes that made a lot of swarf and took some time to clean up.
Thanks
Ray

No kidding…frost everywhere this morning!

I actually got quite a bit done today since the paint on the flywheels was dry.
I did weigh them with the tapers in place and they lost over half their original weight.
Started at 11lbs and now almost exactly 5lbs.
This shows the difference in size.

A few pictures of them on the engine.
These are better proportioned for the size of the engine I think.

I also installed the hall sensor and tested it.

The rest of the time today I cutout the base pieces.
Sanded, stained, and finished them.

Looks real good. Do you build your own spark coil or is it something you buy or make from some other coil? How do you set the timing?
