AI infiltrating web forums?

Don't think for a minute that you recognize *all* the AI. There are AI 'bots that are pretty convincing. The ones that aren't are being trained. We will undoubtedly be inundated with it eventually. Probably in order to advertise - just as we recommend tools and things to each other a good AI could spoon out of a lot of (paid) recommendations. Done 'properly' it will mix that in with some idle chat (mostly vapid) so it doesn't seem like it's always pushing products.

The dumb AI that you do notice is that which is being run by amateurs. DOD aside (I'm sure they have better - at the very least they have more computational power) there is very good AI available to everyone who wants to use it. Using it well, on the other hand, is difficult and the domain of real experts.

Yes the moderators here at HM are on the lookout for such AI, Spam-Bots and ban them when found.
However, if a human member decides to use AI to generate their post, we don’t have much we can do about it.
If anyone suspects AI generated content, please report it and we’ll investigate it.
Thanks
Good to know.

I guess I'm kinda looking at how social media came out as such a great thing and has been mutated into this horrible thing we've released on our society (most especially, our children). It's pretty easy to see AI going the same way: lots of promise and possibilities at the beginning and getting warped into something that ultimately is bad for us.
I was opposite, I saw it from the very beginning as some kind of marketing ploy and never got anywhere close to it. AI is kinda the same as whoever is in power is going to see as a tool. Just about every invention ever made was bent to stupid and evil ends. It’s just sad listening to the alarmists who‘s job it is to keep the herd scared while the real use gets buried.

I wonder what is the deal with finding an AI on a forum? Is it being “trained”? I’m glad to know the mods are on the lookout.

I was listening to one of the big tech guys on Lex Fridman podcast and unlike doomsayers he simply said wouldn’t it be wonderful to have your own(not droid lacky like Siri or Alexa) assistant robot? The faster the world gets and the more complicated while I get older I feel sometimes like I could use some real help instead of computer aided manipulation.

I'm in the alarmist camp.
I have watched the internet and social media (especially) dumb down people. There are so many that believe everything they read. There are sites that look like news sites, and they are not news. They are someone's opinion, and often extremely biased. So many don't take it as opinion, but rather news because it looks like news, talks like news. But sadly most have little fact behind them, and people are hooked into it.
Also general social media seems to be a popularity contest. Again, not much good there. Mostly very vane, stupid, ignorant, vapid stuff ( I can go on). It helped make stupid a star.

Cell phones... most have them and don't communicate. And while driving the other day up to my sons and on the way home, I can't believe how many idiots were in the left lane blocking traffic only to pass them on the right and see them doing something with their phones.. I passed one guy on the left clearly watching something that looked like a sports event. My wife could see the green field and moving figures. (Yea, that's a bonus for society, it made us better at .... what exactly?)

There are many good uses for the newest technologies, but they are often out weighed by the detrimental societal things. I know I sound like my grandparents. It's a race to the bottom.

Here's to the good side... and hope it offsets the bad side.. (I hope, but I don't think so).

As a person who considers himself barely adequate at cerebral endeavors, I look forward with hope, to a computer aided plc programming generator. It wouldn’t even have to be that good. I can see the problems. I just have real trouble with the generating portion. Lol
I’m not worried about AI in the forums. But I’m not worried about a lot of things people worry about. Seems like, if you look back, every generation for as long as we’ve been writing things down has worried about the evils of new technology. And many of those technologies were catastrophically damaged or rendered obsolete by the next round of tech.
So yeah it’s gonna kill some jobs, and create some jobs, and some people will be hurt, and some will be enriched…and the world will keep turning, and then Ill die surrounded by people who no longer speak the language I learned as a child.
But I don’t see AI convincing me to buy something on a forum. If people want to sell something, they send out a hundred free ones to a hundred YouTubers and get a free commercial seen by every single person with interest in the subject. At least that’s how I end up finding something I can’t live without. Lol

I don't really care about AI. I'm extremely bullheaded; getting me to buy something is difficult unless I want/need it, and I don't put a lot of stock in reviews and testimonials. I may or may not recognize a fake conversation. But as I think I've commented before the Forum is well maintained by the Powers That Be and I have faith in this show. At 74 who knows how long before they throw dirt in my face. Others will have to deal with it.

I'm mostly worried about AI getting into the hands of propagandists of any stripe for nefarious purposes. Otherwise I think AI will be mostly a job aid, creativity tool and general intelligence booster for humans.

Next level worry is at the sci-fi level. Westworld is a pretty compelling fiction of what we could be worrying about in the future.

On the forum, we are in control and can just ban a user profile and IP addresses. Not too worried at this stage of AI.
