You can also warm them up a LOT. That makes them softer and stretchier.
It's OK to heat the metal also.

wow, very different. On that video posted about the hoarder, he had a slocomb with digit windows on a depth mic. but yours adjusts the rod with spacers, I didn't expect that. very cool.
edit: and a very wide base.

Yes not free by any means, but I have 10 other things to get done that's not making my own tool holder apparatus so I farmed that out to that company.

There are lots of DIY tool holders that work well and take less space than those plastic ones.
Being cheap, I made my own. I had come by some cutoffs of aluminum angle and had a piece of Unistrut. Cut the angle to fit the dovetail on the tool holders. Drilled and screwed them to the Unistrut, fastened to back splash of lathe. 28 Locations.
