The donut mount is worthwhile. Mine was a good improvement but ultimately the compound is the enemy. Makinging a solid platform for the qctp and only using the compound when needed is a better solution on a 9x20. That let me start taking much heavier cuts and part larger diameter steel more successfully.
This is so true as I have just found out.
Starting work on my 4 jaw chuck back plate and turning down the weld I saw it flex again.
When I put my thumb on the join between the compound top and base I could feel the two parts separating when cutting and a close scrutiny of the top of the toll post showed it also moving.
By screwing all three compound gib screws tight it came under control but then I couldnt move the compound.
Another project now required.
It was time to get the depth of the gear pocket done. After the math it needed to be .080 less than it was. I faced off the case .080 and checked the fit. Perfect. The gears can move only .001 on the shafts. I put it together on the lead screw and the movement is as smooth as before. Getting closer. hew:
