Jack & I worked on the plate welding coupon project for about 5-1/2 hours today. All he did was bevel plate, & all I did was:
(1) measure plates,
(2) match them up in like pairs (by looking at the measurement notes), &
(3) mark them with a stamp (i.e. hammer & punch).
We still need to:
(1) finish bevels,
(2) side mill a 3/32” landing on each plate, &
(3) fly cut the thicker plate in the matched pair so that the thicknesses are close to equal.
There are 35 pair. All of this plate has already been recycled twice. It’s first life was as a retaining wall (“for some rich guy in Napa County” according to my old boss). I bought it from this boss for only $1/lb.
It’s second life was a surface on which to practice SMAW stringer beads. That went on for months, & the plate got pretty warped.
Now it will be used for 1G, 2G, 3G & 4G practice with MIG, TIG & stick processes (butt & edge joints).
Do any of you guys want to buy a set?
