Just noticed a change to EBAY

If eBay's AI monitoring chat thinks you are making a deal with the seller, they will shut the convo down. They don't want any type of talk about shipping and pricing behind the scenes of the actual auction listing. I find myself buying less and less on sleaze bay. There are still good sellers that I frequent, and it is still the best site for buying used carp, but I'm not all that interested in working hard behind the keyboard to save five bucks on two hundred. At least if I pay "extra" at a retailer, I have someone I can hunt down and kill if they screw me. When the savings is small, I'll pay extra for that piece.

garage sales, flea markets, ebay, I try to get a better price. My wife and son will pay whatever they are asking... if it says make offer on ebay I will... usually for more than 5% but for this little bit, just to get a little more. The current version of this with more features is only $22 , so paying 17 for the older version while not unreasonable seems like I can go further... negotiating is a game.. sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, sometimes we both win...

Ebay also takes a cut on shipping charges. When I started selling on ebay in 1999 ebay didn't take a cut on shipping charges. You would see a expensive item for $5 the shipping was $100. Ebay caught on fast to that.

A few "people" screwed it for everyone.

My shipping charges reflect the actual cost plus ebay's fee. I'm not prepared to lose even more than I already to ebay by eating the percentage they charge on shipping.

On a $400 sale I just made it's 20.785%

There was tax on the sale but they didn't break it down that far. So I'm guessing right at 20%

Never saw a 5 guesses before, this was the first. In the past it only had make an offer. Years ago they would show what the history of the selling price was. I would offer a middle value, not looking for the lowest price, just making in more palatable. I was always amazed it was refused. I would up it and it would be refused again... But I know they had sold it for much lower.. So I don't understand sometimes.

Years ago maybe 2014, a guy had an item for way more than it should have been. I offered a slight amount less, and he refused. No one bought it. He relisted it for much more, and it sold .. Some people are either on the fence and when it is unavailable panic and buy the next time, or they think it's better if it's more.

“Guesses” are offers. I think that is what he meant.

As a seller, you don’t want to get spammed by some jerk on eBay hassling you for fun so they limit the offers you can make on a listing.
