I need help connecting the wires coming out of the original Atlas motor on my model # QC54 lathe that I acquired from my father. The cord to the drum switch ( which disappeared ) was cut right at the exit box and the cloth insulation is in rough shape. I will carefully unwrap the wire nuts and put shrink tubing on the wires with cracked insulation.
I have a new drum switch arriving today but unsure where each of the 4 wires are attached. Attached screenshot of how someone wired the switch (that comes wo directions). I appreciate any help.

Ed

Hi Ed, it looks like you have two wirenuts with two wires each and two wirenuts with one wire each- yes?
No motor dataplate?
Show a pic of your drum switch-- need to verify the model/type

Yes you are correct about the # wires per wirenut. The motor data plate only lists volts ( 120) and amps, no diagram. The lathe had a drumswitch on it for 50+ years until we moved it from CT to NC. Somewhere during the move, the old drum switch got lost. I am ashamed to say it has been sitting in my shop unused for a while. Will give this a try once the new switch shows up.
thanks, Ed

Show me the switch when it arrives Ed, want to make sure of the style before I give you a diagram-
keep those wire pairs together with the wirenuts
Do you have a link to it? Amazon?

You need the motor schematic for YOUR motor.... Motor's are wired in different ways and looking at the connection box doesn't give enough indication of what you need to do to make your motor reversible. Some motors only need to switch 2 wires and they run the opposite direction and some don't...

In the case of my motor it couldn't be simply made to spin both ways, but it could spin either way with completely different connections for every wire. I bought a 20 pole 3 position switch from Amazon and made my motor into a reversible one with a complex switch and used all 20 poles to accomplish the task...bomain 20pole switch.jpg

I see two pairs = mains and two single wires = start leg
With that I think we can put it together when the switch arrives

Mark, just got the delivery with great instructions (if you read Chinese). I sent off to my DIL (who is Chinese) but don't expect to hear back until tomorrow. Does this give you enough info?
