2014 POTD Thread Archive

I finnished putting the deviding head I bought last eeek nack together. It was as nasty as the tailstock, but I tore it down and cleaned, degreased, and polished the rust off of it.

Given the appearance of the tailstock as a "before" picture, that's an absolutely beautiful cleanup job!

Congrats on your deal, too!

Thanks hman, I used a combination of brake cleaner and brass brissled brush, then wd 40 and scotch brite. Once the big crud and scale were removed I soked the parts in Evaporust. First time using the Evaporust, and Im more than imppresed. Sorry for the miss-spelled words earlier cold fingers.

I went out to the shop and played with threading at 400rpm. I used a piece of 6061 bar and threaded 24 tpi at 400rpm to a shoulder. With the tool upside down and running backwards it did cut faster but about the same as normal you get a light burr on the tops of the threads. I take a light file to it then a wire brush to clean them. It is easier going backwards because you don't have to stop before hitting the shoulder. I will try a few changes like too grind and try some steel.

I guess its time to build that ball turner and dip into those 304 stainless drops I've been collecting.

Made another grinding wheel bushing. Made a new record - I stayed down at the shop until 7:21 at night! Mwahahahaha!

I made chips for the first time with my Sharp lathe. I've been trying to get parts for it for three months. Finally decided to just put it back together and use it as I could without a cross feed. If you tighten the gib tight enough, you can just use the compound to make some chips.

I've been dealing with Sharp for those three months, trying to get the parts. Never dealt with a more rude bunch of people. I finally went through a dealer in Houston, thinking they would have more pull with the Sharp people in California. No luck. I've had twenty two parts ordered for two months. I was told it would be a ten day lead time! Yesterday, I finally got eight of the parts I had ordered. None of them helped me to get the machine going.

I think I'll tell them to take them back and stick them somewhere. Then I'm going to try getting the parts through South Bend. The machines look the same and they have been willing to try to help. If I can just get some of the parts that I can't make, I think I can make them work even if they don't exactly fit.

Sorry for the rant! Bottom line: Don't buy anything from Sharp!
