What Did You Buy Today?

I got a Strippit punch and die grinder. It's not clear why. It's not this one, and it's in better shape. It is built incredibly solid, and basically just swings a grinding wheel across whatever is in the chuck. I plan to adapt this for another purpose, we'll see how this works out. I also didn't pay $1200 for this...$225.

You can barely hear it running at 3450 rpm.

My lady first learned to drive in a 1960 Volkswagen, and the other day I spotted one from the mid 60s. Since our anniversary is coming up I bought it. It is a bit rough but it was not too expensive. She knows I bought something and is super curious. She has to wait another month!

Pierre, are you downgrading your wife to the car she started with? You might want to call a marriage counselor for advice first. Unless that volksy has tucked leather buckets and dynamic cruise control, she might not be impressed by the gesture.

Hoping the third time is the charm. My Ditron 1um glass scale came in today, from Chengdu, China, (nice place, BTW,) seven (7) days after ordering. Going on the Z axis of my lathe. Comedy of errors on my original order, which I managed to get 100% wrong on both axes. Decided to order from Ditron this time. Hoping there won't be any surprises for me. The delivery date was supposed to be April 24th, I checked today for status and discovered the scale would be delivered today! Seems to be built like a brick **** house, pretty heavy and sturdy. Will check it out in a couple of minutes, but here it is.

Those bracket things at the top are pot metal, but the scale itself is quite hefty. Never can make those crappy brackets work anyways, why do they send them? Not enough holes ever line up to be directly useful... Being that it's pot metal, I can't really even repurpose them.

Testing for functionality right after this post...

I got my Z axis scale yesterday from Ditron. Waiting for my TouchDRO adapter now :)

Test of the new scale. Scale is 1 um. I moved it 150 mm and it read 150.052 mm, which is pretty good for me eyeballing it. If it was 5 um it would be way off. Need to calibrate it, but pretty good! Since I designed my own ELS, I integrated the DRO readout into the ELS. Has built in debounce and all that stuff. Picture is of an ELS board that I use for developing the software, and the test I just did. Moved the read head from the 150 mark to 0 on the scale.

Maybe I will get a Touch DRO for the mill, that would be nice. I've been really impressed with the TouchDRO.

SteelDawg (Oakland Steel) offered me a steep discount on some 12L14 I had my eye on, so I took him up on the offer (adding some to the order, of course, also at a good discount):

They always do a good job packing shipments, and I'm amazed at what they can get into a flat rate envelope.

Unfortunately, I hadn't planned ahead so I needed to add six tubes (the ones on the right) to my Short Bar Storage:

OK, so I only needed to add four tubes, but figured I may as well add a couple of extra for future purchases. The "M" on some of the hex stock means metric. And before you ask, the longer stuff goes here (under the short bar, accessed from the end of the shelving):

I'll need to get more tubes the next time I visit my previous employer (plotting paper tubes): sawn in half and glued together with HD hot melt (used four sticks, including some attaching the new tubes to the original seven on the left, as I didn't want them going anywhere).
