What Did You Buy Today?

For the Shars style if someone wants a sharper insert the TCGX style normally used for aluminum would be an option. They tend to be much sharper. In CCMT form I found the CCGX to work really well on hardened steel and for taking really fine cuts and I'd expect something similar from TXGX over TCMT
Very much recommend the sharper inserts. Due to lower cutting forces of the inserts, your bar deflects less, so it's easier to bore to a precise size.

I bought this set a while back. Not sure if or when it will be available again. However, my guess is like many import tools there are other brands with the identical set.

Edit: This set looks active, but larger shank: https://www.amazon.com/iCarbide-Indexable-Boring-Inserts-Included/dp/B09D3688BX/

At first I complained about the carbide inserts being an odd standard. Closer inspection of the inserts (under a microscope) revealed a geometry I was very pleased with. After some digging they appear to be a Japanese standard-ish insert. I found several boxes of each size and basically bough a lifetime supply of them.

I got this smaller (less bars) set earlier this year:

Also got these via eBay:

I saw that one too. When I was shopping the set with more bars was cheaper! Maybe it was being closed out, or something??? Or chinese marketing campaigns or something... Same inserts for both, IIRC...

@GrifterGuru

My first stop with tooling is the Accusize 'store' on Amazon.co.uk. Sadly there's only a limited subset of the range they offer in the States and it's often a bit more expensive than if I were a US buyer.

Shars do ship internationally: https://www.shars.com/4pcs-stfcr-90-degree-1-2-shank-indexable-boring-bar-set
Interesting! Thanks for the heads up..

Can we sneak an international Shars order past customs without them noticing and slapping hefty taxes on though? LOL :laughing:

Funny thing, ordered a set of these for now, just so I can get the job done...

I’ve purchased from RDG in the past: good people, reasonable prices (including shipping) and they have items I couldn’t find elsewhere (female MT1 3/4” straight shank arbor). Not unlike Blackgate Engineering for tools/tooling.

Never had an issue with RDG in all the times I have ordered from them.

Also ordered some GT inserts for those bars I ordered, will sort some MT inserts later. I already have 20 trays of various inserts for my other cutting tools (various shapes with various tip sizes in MT as well as GT), I am in no hurry to add to that number..

Somewhere between England and my mailbox one of the two arbors (only needed 1, but shipping was the same) I orders went missing (there was a hole in the mailer). I sent photos to RDG and no questions asked I had a replacement about a week later. The only reason they are second to McMaster-Carr is that McM is closer.
