Hello all

I have a 1941 Wards Powr Kraft 10x24 lathe I picked up a few months back. I plan on going through it but first order of business is to find a quick change gear box for it. I find a ton of parts for Logan 10” sn# dependent but the catch is I don’t know the comparable Logan model to the Logan. I don’t really care what the quick change gear box is off of for vintage but I need to figure out my Wards/Logan twin interchangeable model is. My serial number is 2120 possibly 2122.

Any help is appreciated.

DId your lathe come with a QCGB when it was built, or are you trying to add a QCGB to a non gear box equipped lathe?
I have a copy of an old Power-Kraft catalog (don't know what year) that indicates that conversion kits were available as
accessories. I'm not aware that was ever the case for Logans. Some folks have added Logan QCGB's to Logan
change gear lathes and it was Not a bolt on deal and required modification. So, it sounds as though a Wards QCGB
would be needed.
What model lathe do you have? Is it a 700?

Wanting to add a qcgb to a change gear machine. My old parts book shows it all but it’s no longer available through Logan. That’s why I ask what models of Logan are compatible with my wards machine with serial number. The info I have on it says it’s a “W699”, early production, has the countershaft motor set up etc with a flat drive belt. I’m not scared of modifications ....I was hoping a southbend guru would chime in and say you can get one from an SBL 10l with these mods etc etc etc as eBay is loaded with SBL qcgb’s.

Anyways, again, thanks in advance

It looks as though the W699 was the first model of Wards production, followed by the 700. The Wards kit for
the Model 700 was p/n 2138K, so one of those might be a possibility. I would suggest calling Scott Logan to see what he knows about interchangebility with early Logans. The earliest 10" QCGB Logan that I'm aware of was the 815, but they're pretty rare.

This is pretty common. But you may find that there are other issues that come into play regarding the spacing from the bed. I believe that Logan has a FAQ which deals with adding a QC gearbox to a non-QCGB machine somewhere on their site. But, 'twere me, I'd use it for a while using the change gears and see how much of a 'must have' it would be for me. Obviously a QCGB is pretty nice, but maybe not essential.

And to your question, yours is a 10" swing machine, no? I'd expect all QCGB off a 10" machine would work, again, with some spacing issues to resolve.

Clough42 has been doing a series on an Electronic Leadscrew. It looks like he is getting pretty close to done and he sounded like he was going to make the PCB and firmware available (whether open source or not, IDK). This might be a more readily available alternative, as I expect what you're looking for will be hard to find and expensive when you find it. Here's the first video in the series:
