I agree, the broken tooth on the bull gear pretty much makes it a no-deal, unless the seller comes way down, AND you have a source for the replacement. You don't need back gears to do 75% of your turning, but if you want to do single point threading, it will be something you'll need at some point. Sourcing and replacing the bull gear won't be as easy as one of the spur gears in the end gearing. I'd be inclined to remove the spindle, remove the bull gear, and attempt to braze the broken tooth (or teeth).
I like flat belt drive. I had a Sheldon 11" lathe with an overhead flat belt that was a sweetheart, wish I'd kept it to be honest.
