POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

Seems like I have 0.0007” over 6” with the right sided cylinder being larger than the one near the chuck.
You might still be looking at some deflection there. What sort of cutter/insert where you using?

(Fiddling with lathes seems to be a never-ending challenge. :) )

I enjoy learning about all the fiddling. As for the insert I took 5-thou passes with this CCMT:

We have these unholy Satan spawn to watch out for in my neck of the woods now. Speak softly and carry a baseball bat.

Is that sh** real!!? Or did you make that in your lathe?

EDIT: Oh carp! - "The Asian giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia) is the world's largest hornet. Native to parts of Asia and Russia, it was found in the Pacific Northwest in late 2019, although so far it's not known to have become established there." And they have made their way into the U.S. They can be as big as 2"!!!

Yeah there’s been a couple sightings of those monsters around here too although not in great numbers (fortunately). Terrifying….

And lethal, at least to children and elderly they say. Makes me want to carry bird shot. Or maybe #4 shot, I dunno... Or slugs even! A couple years ago they were finding them nesting in trees in the neighboring counties. I was like, hide yo kids, hide yo wife! There's murder hornets up in this place!

As for the insert I took 5-thou passes with this CCMT:
Typically inserts aren't very sharp. They'll give you a good bit of deflection. They run that way normally, so its just the way they work. Really good for hogging off material, tho.

Try a dead sharp small radius (or square corner) HSS tool. Most of that might go away.

FYI, I was turning 1.5" steel with inserts, seeing about 5 tenths deflection over 4.5" this weekend. So your 7 tenths deflection seems reasonable.

I don't have any HSS tools. Is there any sharp (or sharp-er) insert you'd recommend? Is there a smaller radius insert that might reduce tool pressure? As a novice I decided (perhaps mistakenly) to do inserts only and am not set up for sharpening HSS blanks.
