Time-travelling back to the 1980s - weird hobby with no local mentor. But now, there aren't so many print (paper) resources as there were then. Perhaps you could print off the manual and mail it to him?

Im sure he has the tech , he just does not use it.
Two things will happen , 1 he will figure it out 2 around mid july he comes down my way to visit family and he will hand it to me as a BoxOparts
