So interestingly after 44 years the U.S.Navy has determined that I am NOT missing !!!
Quite a relief because I've been paying taxes ALL this time and our SS number is what they identify you with for service records at least since I was in. So when I started having health issues in 2019 I was forced to retire early.
This prompted contacting SS Disability, my private disability carrier through HR at work and finally a booth at the county fair suggested I try the Veterans. Of course Covid hit right after we started the paperwork.
S.S. tied up with atty's for 2.5 years, supposed to get something starting next month, I'm 65 this Wednesday anyway so other than helping the atty's make money I don't see any real difference !!
Private carrier is now with atty's also, apparently is reduced by whatever I actually get from SS....???
I don't remember them reducing the payment that came out of my check every Friday....
Anyway the U.S.Navy has after the same 2.5 years of paperwork determined that yes the injury I had back in 1977 is legitimate and they will give me medical coverage which is $170 savings against the S.S. cost per month here in Ohio and even send my wife $55/month for helping take care of me ! (I don't think she got that when I was in the service but we did have medical for her and kids)
So all this isn't intended to be whiny but to explain why I am very hesitant to believe any orhanization that claims "to be here to help "
I'm getting stuff from DAV that wants me to pay dues to belong to their group.
Anybody know if the dues/donations actually get to veterans or does it just oil another big machine ?
If this is too political just dump the whole thing.
If somebody does have an opinion but doesn't want it public maybe PM me ?

When people start approaching me with their hand out, I get real leary. You've already contacted your county's Veterans Department?

Actually I called but my rep is out till August 8th, we are a very small county.

When I used to work for the VA, I was involved with service officers from all organizations (DAV, VFW, AMVETS, American Legion, state/county). I have even attended the service officer's national conventions for DAV and American Legion. I also used AMVETS and DAV to handle my own service claims. They are there to help you through the difficult process of navigating the system and successfully getting your award. They're like lawyers representing you. They know the system, and they know the people processing the claims on the other side. It was my choice to become a life member of DAV because they helped me and I support what they represent. I'd try to get in and sit down with a service officer to go over your claim. It got me miles ahead.

Yes, the DAV and AMVETS help veterans directly. My DAV rep helped me through the VA process. They actually did most of the work. I've been a life member since and donate when I can.

Thank you guys for your service.

I was approached by a start up that was supposed to help vets with PTSD and physical disabilities. Having family members and friends that are vets I jumped at the chance to help. I had been doing some volunteer work with disabled people using my horses and arena. I was impressed with how many people were willing to help. Anyway, the organization was doing fundraisers and some campaigning while using my location, animals and me for a location. Never once did anyone step foot on my property or come for any support. I believe it was all about lining someone's pocket using a subject we are passionate about.

I don't see DAV in the same light. I understand your caution.

I'm not a veteran, just a son and I don't have any experience with the DAV.

I maintain my Sons of AMVETS membership because they're the ones I see in our Michigan community who step up to help those who are reluctant to ask for what they have EARNED. Since each chapter is run by volunteers I suspect what help you'll get will depend on your local chapter.

Best of luck with your case, but more importantly with your health. May you have many joyful years ahead and not have to worry or fight for what you've worked for all your life.

John
