Coolant filtration?

I would like to catch most of the big stuff on the drain back. Is anybody filtering after the pump, and what setup? It's my first experience with a coolant tank, and pump.

I have a small sponge placed at the bottom of the chip/coolant tray where the coolant return is. It catches almost all of the chips. When the coolant has drained away I clean the sponge using the shop vacuum.

Filters we is !

Whatcha got for me Dave? I was thinking Scotch-brite pads on the drain, but I'm not sure about the pressure side. I'm also going to try the Mobilmet 424 coolant/cutting fluid.

Why not the Mobilmet 700 series?

I would have to go back and look at them again to see why I chose 424, but I predominantly work with aluminum, so I think 424 had the better purpose listed, if that makes sense. I did not want to have to analyze water based coolant, and I also think 766 had a problem with staining, and eating yellow metal?

No staining or eating yellow metal as far as I know.
Sounds like you made the correct choice based on material.

My coolant reservoir has this little filter built in:

I added a plexiglas sheet and a seal to reduce evaporation:

And here is the sponge I added at the bottom of the chip/coolant tray where the coolant return is:

I put filtration on my lathe's coolant system quite a few years ago. On my lathe the coolant drops into the chip tray and flows to a sump. The sump's inlet is covered with a perforated metal (about 1/8" holes) to prevent the larger chips from getting into the sump. The sump has a capacity of about a gallon and is divided by a weir plate so that the heavier particles will settle out in the inlet side of the weir. Coolant then flows over the weir into the coolant tank (about 5 gallon capacity). The suction pipe leaving the coolant tank has a very fine screen metal sock on it. Coolant is then pulled through a Fram automotive oil filter into the pump then out to the coolant spigot. I am using Mobilmet 766. Photo attached.
