I bought a 66 Corvette about a year ago from an out-of-state private party. I flew to the sellers location, made the transaction at his bank and had it notarized on site, then made arrangements to have it transported. If you don't want to make a trip to look at the car in person, there are escrow companies that specialize in this type of transaction. They aren't cheap, but cheaper than paying for a car that you never get. By the way, this was the second flight I took to look at a car. The first one didn't work out. Anyway, just my two cents.
