ThatLazyMachinist. Great beginners videos.

IIRC, it wasn't Joe that had an issue with Quinn, it was a number of his followers who had opinions on the way Quinn approached the build and her work holding when she and Joe made a Stuart horizontal engine a couple of moths apart.
Well, that's a relief. Whilst I doubt that Joe is a card carrying affiliate member of the National Organisation of Women*, I'd rather hope that he'd not dismiss someone who seems to be a reasonably talented hobby machinist and an effective YouTube teacher in the way that I've seen in some comments in his video.

...that it was to be expected that an Amateur Hobbyist, using Hobbyist machines with size limitations would approach the build differently than a Professional Machinist with full-size machines.
Ah, perhaps a little clumsily worded (but ultimately not incorrect, Quinn is an amateur and Joe is a professional and the machine tools they have access to are very different in capability), which could be perceived as patronising, so possibly the reason why Quinn banned him from the comments section on her videos.

If this is the case I guess I'd not judge Quinn too harshly for her overreaction. She's shown fair to middling guts putting herself out there in the hobby machining community which is dominated by men and, like most previously male dominated technical pursuits, not famed for its sensitivity. Some of the comments she gets on her videos make me cringe and those are the ones that haven't been deleted. It's probably easy to get peeved when someone like Joe makes an apparently patronising comment. Eh, hopefully, at some point they'll shake hands and have a beer. We're all after the same perfect surface finish after all. ;)

*first US women's organisation I came across that would do to humourously illustrate my point. I know nothing about the organisation, so please don't read it as me supporting or for that matter, mocking them.

Well, I had intended this as a quick heads up thread for beginners about Marc's beginner machinist course, as opposed to "tell me your favourite YouTube machinist" but eh, as we all know, no thread intention survives contact with other forum members!

Can't beat 'em, join em.

There are YouTubers I watch for education and those I watch for entertainment (the latter I do learn from but it's not the primary reason I watch them).

Two examples of the latter are Artisan Makes and Ade's Workshop; both great watching for different reasons.

Artisan Makes has this unguarded blithe enthusiasm and honesty and it's always worth seeing how what he's working on turns out.

Ade is a Welshman who right from the get go had a natural presenter's ease with the camera. I just enjoy watching him work and more importantly working out what he's going to do as he goes along; no rigorous planning for this one. Sure, that's partly due to years of experience but also he's just that sort.

(that said in a few of his early videos, he had what looked very, very, very reminiscent of a neo-nazi symbol up on a board behind his lathe. It's possible it was a clumsy attempt at a Celtic cross but...)

The English Hobby Machinist is a good watch too.

Oh and DoubleBoost (I have to put aside my aversion to the savages from the North East:grin:)

We are all here to support and grow our hobby, not to mention sharing our discoveries, you never know who might be lurking in the thread and find very useful information in the back and forth that will help inspire and encourage..... this is a good thread, great discussion.... :)

I have a low patience threshold with many videos / video makers. If there's a lot of idle blather, I won't suffer through it looking for some gold. There are a handful of channels I do like, but only a few that I check regularly: Joe Pie, Robrenz, Stephan Gotteswinter, and Inheritance Machining.
ThatLazyMachinist has a great video or two on fits.

Understand; I usually limit my general watching to have something to do while on the stationery bike or elliptical, but now that I am sidelined I’m filling more time half-watching while doing something else.

He does, that was where I learned about fits and tolerances. :encourage:

I'm with you. I have no patience for content creators who make every topic a multi-part series with endless narration when one tightly edited vid would suffice. An exception and something I very much look forward to is Joe Pie's miniature series, for the tips on workholding. I watch ToT for the humor, and I've enabled notifications for his channel, which I almost never do. The real kiss of death (for me, anyway) is content creators who have obviously taken inspiration from other channels without leaving the proper credit. At least one channel mentioned in this thread used to do that, and I will not watch their vids, period.
