ThatLazyMachinist. Great beginners videos.

Abso-bleedin-lutely. :encourage:

I've bought a few "puffers", and they all have the puff of an asthmatic 90 year old after walking up a long incline, and/or have a tip designed so that if you give them a decent squeeze, the tip is never pointing where you want it.

I really like the idea, since it avoids the problem of the force of air from a compressor being potentially strong enough to shove chips where you don't want them (and also the fact that I have yet to get a compressor and haven't worked out where I can squeeze it in, when I do) but so far no joy with what I've found.

I have two airguns choked down to where they’re literally a breeze if the tip is not right at the object. The problem is I don’t always fire up the compressor when I go into the shop and firing it up just for one or two “pssssttt” is time consuming and wasteful.

We all (well, apart from Joe Pie it seems!) love BlondiHacks, and her Lathe Skills and Mill Skills playlists are often deservedly well-regarded. MrPete is also often talked about (I love the man*), and to be fair, Joe Pie is also very good (albeit a little click-baity with his video titles), but there's another YouTube machinist teacher who is less well known, but just as good as the others and arguably in some ways better.

Take a look at ThatLazyMachinist on YouTube. I've been watching a lot of his videos and have learned a lot from them.

If you're after something that goes a little deeper into the subjects us beginners often need help with, Marc's videos are very good.

They tend to be set out in a more 'course'-like way (he used to be a shop teacher) and do delve deeper into what's going on behind the scenes (his videos on chips, feeds, and speeds, for example talk about phases of chip formation: penetration, accumulation and separation).

He has a sense of humour that's very dry, but also a bit absurdist (think it's the French Canadian coming out in him!) that lightens up his videos nicely too.

The sound on the videos (as he himself has acknowledged) isn't Dolby beautiful but you can always hear what he's saying (although he does pronounce 'x' as 'icks'; that French thing coming out again, I guess).

Warning though, if you're averse to safety being talked about and get irritated by anybody who isn't afraid to bring the subject up regularly (he doesn't bang on about it for long periods, apart from in his four part 'Safety' series obviously, but he will briefly mention safety at the appropriate point in many of his videos), then Marc's videos may not be for you.;)

He has a complete beginners machinist course ( https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLudDtFHckFPiWdQbI-BmDcpIQtR_x0xxZ&si=hU0_YYkP-xr4SuFX ), that is definitely worth checking out.

*I reckon if my ADHD had been diagnosed and treated and MrPete had been my DT teacher (Design and Technology; that was what 'shop class' was called in my school in the 1980's), I may well have ended up doing something very different as a career than the software engineering career I burdened myself with!
I agree, he is very good. Sometimes he drags on a bit but the content is outstanding.

I don't watch every thing Joe Pi puts out, but I recall some pretty snarky remarks over using cyanoacrylate adhesive for work holding and it was very clear he was talking about Quinn. To me it simply came across as unnecessary, condescending, and disappointing. Made me think of the Practical Machinist forum 10 years ago. I've read some of his comment responses that were very dismissive and "I'm the pro, yada yada." that were simply disappointing. Enough so I don't bother taking the time to read the comments at all.
I like Quinn, She and I have had a couple exchanges in Patrion which were a bit less than wonderful but I like her content and she doesn't know who I am or what I know so I let it go. Inheritance Machining uses super Glue occasionally and under certain circumstances I understand why. At the end of the day, I watch all these folks for ideas, knowledge and entertainment, for me to support them they need to excel in at least 2 of those categories without making me feel insulted due to their delivery. The only one that I believes delivers all 3, "ideas, knowledge and entertainment" would be This Old Tony, Quinn and IM are great at ideas and entertainment and ABOM79 has ideas and knowledge.

Thanks, someone needs a woobie over there.

I figure this is the video in question, and someone simply does not like blondie.

Theres really nothing earth shattering in the video as spring winding is mainly variations on a theme.

One reply deserves to be highlighted:

Clearly you are not happy.
What would it take to make you happy again?
Did you suffer emotional turmoil?
If there is a thing, these things tend to work themselves out, eventually.
I wouldn't sweat it, but you are free to do whatever.
She is building an A3 switcher from Kozo's book and has never said otherwise. Ahhhh somebody needs a hug, a warm glass of milk and a nap....

What I want to know is where did she get the rocket puffer she uses to blow chips?
Got mine from Amazon. IIRC someone gifted her this one. Previously she used a makeup puffer. To Mr its OK, but only when dry. Lubricant soaked chips are a different matter.

FWIW, I put a ball valve as close to the air source as possible, in my case just after the tank and the first factory quick connect. Used the air/hydraulic Locktite and ensured I had zero leak down. Could be done with a relay valve if the compressor is out of the shop. So always have pressure without having to wait. My compressor is in the shop so flipping one valve isn't a big deal.

@Shiseiji and @RaisedByWolves

Hark at you fancy boys with all your squeezed atmospheres!

Eh, need a compressor, I suppose; 'fraid it will only be a 50 litre fella, none of your honking great 20 gallon jobbies, not got the space right now.

You got me beat, my compressor only has a 1.25 gallon receiver....
