ThatLazyMachinist. Great beginners videos.

Apologies for being a bit testy, but there's a whole thread on another forum where a few people got their knickers in a twist about that particular video and it is not an enjoyable read to say the least.

Failing to give proper credit can often be an oversight rather than deliberate plagiarism, and besides, very few ideas in our hobby are new.
Can you share a link to that?

PM if you feel the need, but I'm morbidly curious as you can learn a lot about people by how they act on different forums.

Not watched enough Mr Pete to have seen that kind of attitude displayed to the extent that I see in Joe Pie but I get where you're coming from.

Ive mentioned before that I view these guys from a different perspective as my skill set approaches theirs, not that I cant learn from them and them from me to a degree.

However, Mr pete lost me totally after viewing the video where he ran the co-ax indicator at 700rpm as he didn't feel like changing the belts on the machine.

I mean, if your intent is to teach, teach proper methods and not that hot mess.

Found the video in question. My original comment is still on top.

Eh, if the mods feel uncomfortable about me posting this URL, they should absolutely be completely relaxed about editing or even zapping this post of mine, I'll be perfectly happy. :)

Reading it made me varyingly feel sad, laugh out loud, and want to punch people in the face!:grin:

I regret using the word "plagiarism" in my earlier posts, because people tend to get down in the weeds on legal definitions. I'm talking about channels that are (or have been) overly derivative of other channels works. It's rarely one thing, it might be a bunch of little things over a period of time, as a reason why I may have stopped watching.

If I post a series showing a build of a miniature milling machine build, that's all good, people might like to see my take on setups, etc. If I copy, part-for-part, Joe Pie's setups, illustrative diagrams, workflow, etc etc, that might not be legally actionable, but it's certainly derivative,

I don't know about the video mentioned earlier in this thread, I have not watched it, nor did I see the thread referencing it on the "other" forum. But my curiosity is up now and I'll probably go look for them.

Or not. Depends on if I'm still curious in a few hours, or (more likely) have moved on to another shiny object.

Thanks, someone needs a woobie over there.

I figure this is the video in question, and someone simply does not like blondie.

Theres really nothing earth shattering in the video as spring winding is mainly variations on a theme.

One reply deserves to be highlighted:

Clearly you are not happy.
What would it take to make you happy again?
Did you suffer emotional turmoil?
If there is a thing, these things tend to work themselves out, eventually.
I wouldn't sweat it, but you are free to do whatever.

I just went and looked at the video post. Rarely do as I have premium and normally just watch on Sat. night with my GF who loves her accent. Fully conscious the posts can be edited and giving credit in the video is accepted practice, she has this posted in the description:

"The fixtures shown in this video borrow substantially from Kozo Hiraoka in his amazing book, The Pennsylvania A3 Switcher. If you thought this was clever, go buy his book for way more stuff like this: https://secure.villagepress.com/store... "
Do we know that attribution was included when the vid was first posted, or was it edited in following some criticism over not including it?
I'd never seen the video or heard anything about it until the discussion in this thread, so I couldn't say one way or another, And as I do not have the book in my library, even if I watched the video, I'd have no idea whether it followed the book in lock-step or not.

Hiraoka's book is out of print, incidentally, and hard to find at a reasonable price. Which is unfortunate, it appears to be a solid reference for model engineering.

Don't know, that's why I didn't make a definite statement. Yes, and Quinn suggested Village Press re-issue the book and was told flatly no. She has suggested people continue to write Village Press.

I'd guess (and this is just a guess) it wasn't initially included, based on the comments and reactions from the thread on the "other" forum. Had it initially been included in the video description, I'd think that fact would have been pointed out by her many supporters who posted to that thread (as you did here).

And not having the book to reference, it's difficult to draw any conclusions either way. I can say that it wouldn't have been something I'd have brought up in a machining forum, and especially not calling out the channel by name. More likely I'd grumble a bit to myself and then forget all about it because there really are more pressing things.

I'm not here to run anybody down, I only mentioned non-attribution as a data point regarding why I choose not to follow some channels. We all have our own reasons for following or not following a particular creator.

And one error out of how many videos, especially those outside this train build, where she often mentions where or who something came from, to me isn't an unforgivable offence. Others obviously have different views on what can or should be overlooked, and just can't be.

What I want to know is where did she get the rocket puffer she uses to blow chips?

Abso-bleedin-lutely. :encourage:

I've bought a few "puffers", and they all have the puff of an asthmatic 90 year old after walking up a long incline, and/or have a tip designed so that if you give them a decent squeeze, the tip is never pointing where you want it.

I really like the idea, since it avoids the problem of the force of air from a compressor being potentially strong enough to shove chips where you don't want them (and also the fact that I have yet to get a compressor and haven't worked out where I can squeeze it in, when I do) but so far no joy with what I've found.
