Hey guys, New member wondering if anyone close to central/seacoast NH needs a surface grinder… as I have few extra sitting in a trailer waiting for your reply.
Now the rest of the story. It all started from a YouTube video with TOT (This old Tony) and now I’m hooked. I have a small Clausing lathe, Wells Index 747 mill along with a Reed 618 surface grinder. Living and working in a tool rich area the hunt has been easy, my wife says a little tooo easy. All for cheap I’ve managed to get the droppings from 2 machine shops that closed the doors. Boxes of tooling, surface plates, vises, and about everything else I ever wanted and never needed… almost to good to be true. Well it might have been too good because most of the “good” stuff was gone. I was picking the dumpsters and making offers they couldn’t refuse, or more likely didn’t care. I guess putting stuff in my truck vs. the can, it’s the same thing with no hauling.
So, today’s deal, I have 3 K O lee 618 surface grinders sitting in my construction trailer waiting for a new home. The truth is I have 10 surface grinders….and a much longer story, but time is short, and winter is coming. I need the trailer for work, so they are going somewhere, hopefully to someone who needs/wants one. All were running perfect when I picked them up about a month ago. Bearings sounded great, everything worked. This was a precision grinding shop that sharpened carbine inserts. By the looks of things money didn’t matter to keep the stuff running better than new. The owner passed away and the kids opened the vault and locked the door. After 5 years the estate was settled, and the new owner sold most everything. Then I showed up looking for a surface grinder and got the contents for what I would pay for one machine. The machines have a cabinet cover to control dust or coolant. They might have a mag chuck or a slot table or just the flat surface for mounting. The Y and Z axis move with the factory crank handles. The X axis has been converted to a “smart” motor that runs on dc power. Sounds scary but I’m a woodworker with ZERO electrical/computer G code experience and I got them to move. Free software online and seems simple. Also has a Fanuc control to move X axis. Probably easy to change back to manual. All have 1.5 hp 3 phase 208 motors. The couple I got rid of, the table and spindle had very little runout. I used the 10ths indicator, so little I couldn’t measure.
Now is a very busy time, but if you are close or have a real plan let me know and I’ll try and help. I have about $100 in each machine, so if you want one, be understanding, and flexible about my schedule and time. They are on a pallet and I have a Moffit (forklift) at the main shop located in Middleton NH, I could load if it works out. They are heavy, and I really don’t see (or want) a way to move without equipment. If close to central/Seacoast NH I can drop off if you make it EASY. I do have guys at the shop that can wrap and put on a truck, we use XPO logistics, but major trucking companies all deliver. Not sure what that will cost you or if its worth it. I’ll keep them under cover for a little while longer, then off to scrap. I’ll try and answer any questions, but my time is very limited. All the best, DW
