Air Compressor recommendation

After a lot of research, including what was available in my area (Southern Ontario), I purchased an Eagle Compressor Silent Series a few years back. My wife and I needed a small portable unit for home renos, carpentry work, and inflating tires. So far, I've been really impressed with the build quality and (lack of) volume. Made in USA with a quality level of components I'm used to seeing in industry. I'd definitely recommend looking into their full line of compressors for one that matches the capacity you need since they offer their Silent Series in a wide range of sizes.

I just replace my air compressor with one from Harbor freight. Had to change bracket because I went to a larger compressor. I replaced with a 5hp compressor from a 3HP.

I have been using the Eastwood QST 30/60 scroll compressor for about 3 years now. Previously I had the Craftsman 5HP oilless. I got to a phase in my truck project where I was doing a LOT of weld dressing and rust/paint removal with an air die grinder. Wasted a lot of time waiting for the compressor to fill. And the noise!
A new compressor needed to be FAST, SMALL, and QUIET. Fast enough to stay ahead of a medium sized paint spray gun.
The Eastwood scroll fits the need. I am no longer waiting for it. It is quiet enough when running that music and normal conversation are not impacted. And it fills quickly so it's not on very long. No need for hearing protection.
The only trouble I have had was a small oil leak at a compression fitting in the oil circulation line. An e-mail to Eastwood resulted in an entire hose assembly shipped out quickly and at no charge.
The attached photo is the only one I have including at least part of the compressor. I don't want to go out in the cold to get a new image. You can see it ( at upper right) tucks in to a small space. It is less wide than those wire storage racks.

Yup, the noise is killer. Thats why I set mine up in a storage room out the work area. I take care of it as best I can by draining it and the fact that its in a cleaner area away from over spray and solvent mists helps also. Iv'e had it for around 20+ years and so far so good.99FC1CB6-84F7-4F39-AC3C-AA005D63509A.jpeg26DF8183-FD7D-43AD-8227-5394AC6067BB.jpegD0544FC8-A9C7-47BD-A4B6-97766D54D23B.jpeg

Mine is also in a storage room separate from the workshop. It’s a vertical model with a cast iron compressor, Chinese, but my neighbor had no use for it and wanted it out of his garage. It’s now equipped with an Amazon automatic drain so every time it’s powered up it’s drained and the drain activates every 15 minutes as long as the power is on.

When my shop was built I had a dedicated circuit run to the store room for the compressor and to a light fixture in the shop ceiling. It’s equipped with a blue light bulb to remind me that the circuit is hot when I shut the shop down for the evening. If the TV or radio is on even at a modest level (surround sound system in the shop), the compressor isn’t audible. Even without the sound system on, the compressor is barely heard due to the insulated wall separating it from the shop.

Glad I found this thread. I, too, am looking to replace my air compressor. The one I have now is a 60 gallon. I think it's rated at 7 CFM @ 90 PSI. Max PSI is 175.

I've been looking to replace it with something similarly sized, but with a higher CFM rating. I came across this Ingersol Rand at Tractor Supply. Same one a friend of mine has (he replaced the one I have now with this one). But I am not sure it will be quiet enough for the wife. There's no option to move it outside.

It's also a lot bigger than the one I have now. It has a lot of positive reviews, but there are also quite a few negative ones.

can you get a decibel reading from your friend? if he doesn't have a meter, maybe a phone app?
get a reading from 5 feet and then 10 feet.. it should help to tell you how much it falls off every 5 ft.

edit: y es, it does depend on the room and whats in it. but it's a start, and you probably know his shop/room with the compressor.

I've heard it run. It's not as loud as the one he gave me. The pump needs to be rebuilt, but they don't sell parts for it anymore. Sounds like a V8 with straight pipes. LOL!

I'd like to find something even quieter, I'ver heard good and bad things about the California compressors.

It matches my compressor But I must admit mine is not quiet. Im glad its not in the shop area.

I have a Quincy 60g compressor. Runs at 1/2 the RPM as many compressors, which makes it quieter. If I recall correctly, it delivers about 10scfm at 150psi. As long as I'm not sand blasting it keeps up with what I need. If sand blasting, repositioning the parts usually is sufficient for the compressor to catch up. The 80g was a little large for my garage.

Much, much quieter than what I had before.

Had a blow off valve that progressively started to leak. It caused cycling of the compressor. Replaced the brass valve with a stainless valve and the cycling is practically nil for non-usage of the compressor.
