Air Compressor recommendation

My Quincy QT series is a few years old now, and I smile every time I hear it kick on, because at 65 decibels it sounds like a refrigerator coming on compared to my old one. The 5 hp model puts out 19 cfm at 150 psi, which is enough to spoil a man.

I'm jealous. What specific model compressor do you have? My old Devilbliss is circling the drain.

single or two stage? based on the low decibels, I would think two.

If you got time, watch for old quincy units. I just got a model 325/5 hp for $110 a month ago. Got a similar one but 7.5 Hp for $300 five years ago. My son has also bought a couple in the same price range. This is all at on line auctions.

The QT series mentioned above is still a good compressor, but not like the old commercial ones. QT series is splash lubricated, while the new QR series is made in USA and pressure lubricated. BUT you got to mortgage yer left nut to get a new QR series unit.

<UPDATE> went looking and QR series - out of production. Replaced by QP series.

these are pressure lubricated. Just guessing, bet they are now made off shore.

ANYWAY, back to the old units. They are super quiet and made to run 24x7 for decades.

I’ve also been eyeing for an air compressor, but my biggest concern at the moment is where to position it.

A friend had a recently serviced compressor blow up in his shed. The boom sent everything in the shed flying, including the doors. Here’s the aluminium flooring after the incident (sorry for the poor quality, it’s a screenshot taken from a video):

There was a 10mm sheet of plywood under the diamond plate.

Needless to say, if my friend had been in the shed during the blast, he’d surely be dead.

my 60 gallon, 5hp Quincy is about 15 years old and has been flawless. 220V baldor motor. 2 stage pump is the only way to go if you use any kind of air tools. I use it for everything from painting to sand blasting. I use all black iron lines and have 4 water traps. living in florida, humidity is an issue, esp when painting.

I got the "loaded" version of the QT-5, guess it's been 3-1/2 years now: https://www.quincycompressor.com/products/reciprocating-piston/qt/

Two stage, so it trades some volume for higher pressure. Definitely quiet.

ASME tank, Quincy pump, and Baldor motor all have made in USA data plates. Quincy isn't owned by Ingersoll-Rand, so they've kept production in the midwest. It's a solid unit.

Pic from a happy day, out with the old...

your old one also looks like a two stage
The original head was a single piston and blew up (I rode it hard, must've done 5 full-strip automotive body projects with it), so that head is a HF 2-piston single-stage. Thumpy, out of balance, and the Leeson motor couldn't stay cool even though I geared it right according to the spec sheet for the Chinese compressor head. Goofy v-twin jitterbug POS with reed valves that clapped at 90 decibels, I hated that thing so bad I gave it away for free just to see it hauled off!

This is my California Air compressor and I love it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TDNKBMC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

It stays in the garage and is perfect for tires and nail guns. It is as quiet or quieter than my big belt drive big compressors.

In the shop I have an 80gal 2 stage and an ancient 40 gallon triple piston single stage. I use the smaller single stage triple piston 90% of the time. The big 80 gallon takes too long to come up to pressure and then will be empty by the next time I need air a week or two later. For media blasting the 80 gal is the way to go. For everything else the 40 gallon 3 piston belt drive is the ticket... except tires and nail guns where the portable California Air compressor rules.
