2014 POTD Thread Archive

Second project today. First was the vises.

The shoulder bolt was really a temporary thing but after using it I hated it. So after I finished the vises I turned a new handle for the tool post nut out of stainless and brass. Feels way better.

Thanks! I particularly like the how to part and the fast motion to get the idea but not have to sit through a long process.

I kept spilling my flux when I was silver soldering so I made a holder for the bottle and brush.

Started with an old gear out of a rear end. Had to anneal it to be able to machine it. Took a lot of heat to get it up to temperature. Used an acetylene torch next time I put the darn thing in a kiln. Board it out to fit the bottle and milled a section out to hold the brush. Made the brush holder out of PVC and glued it in place. Added a cork to the brush to cap it off. Painted it with bronze paint and added rubber feet. Was going to leave it bare steel but the flux is corrosive so I painted it.

Brazing a fork for a bike I'm building for a friend. Fluxed and in the fixture:

I like brazing with bronze. Good stuff.

Three forks in the works (this one on the left):

Very nice use of an old gear cluster. The paint really adds to it nicely.

Beautiful job on the forks Ryan. Did you machine the fixture on you PM935? The fixture looks just as nice as the forks themselves.

Mike.

The open crown on the right looks cool as well. Very nice job.

Jeff

Thanks. The crowns on the right and center forks are investment cast pieces. There are a lot of great options available these days, so you can really suit your taste/needs. The uni-crown was just me trying something new (for me) with close-out priced legs. I don't think they look as nice and I prefer the cast crowns, but they are super-tough.

Mike, the fixture was made on a Bridgeport in a class I took a few years ago. Most of it is aluminum and could be scaled down, so you could make it with most any mill. I think it needs a couple of tweaks in the name of accuracy, so I started the mods last night.

Tool free 10/22 take down bolt.
So nothing really hard to do but I am still new to the world of machining.
