2014 POTD Thread Archive

This was actually done on Saturday. I picked up a used qc54 for the qc gearbox. The gearbox is in pretty good shape, the rest of the lathe is questionable. Took it apart at the sellers place. Had a little mishap but I think the cover can be welded.

Project number one is new fuel tanks for the boat. But all morning was taken up with paperwork to transfer a CA Salmon Troll Permit.
Once I got in the shop I made and installed the fuel baffles in both tanks. Just before dark I got around to measuring the cylinder for my fluting project.
Then my phone died so I couldn't capture the perfect spiraling chips my lathe was cutting.

Well I surprised my self by managing to make one of these, all done on my lathe, and only a couple of tiny slip ups that don't matter at all..

Atlas owners should recognize this troublesome part!

Nice work! Pretty intricate part for lathe-only. What accessories did you use? Milling attachment? Rotary table? As I a "lathe-only" guy I'm very interested in the details of how you did that.

I could not find the "what did you do in your shop today" so I posted my work under home made tooling - please take a look at it and let me know what you think!

Caleb Army_070.JPGCaleb Army_066.JPGCaleb Army_074.JPGI ground and anchored bottom of stand to as close to level as I could. I made clamps with a heel and a 50* face. I shimmed the mill table level and tried to clamp it down. I then found the need to put an adjustable stop against one of each pair of clamps to act as an adjustable gib in the clamp system.

Caleb Army_073.JPGCaleb Army_067.JPGCaleb Army_069.JPG I stripped the lathe down some and drilled mounting holes in the feet where they can't be seen. I made custom T nuts and bolted the lathe down. Next I used the old brake table and some coil stock for house siding and made a three piece removable table cover and backsplash. The pieces are made with an integral s drive as used in heating and cooling to join sheet metal. I can slide the table cover off for access to the T slots and the backsplash from the back of the table to and on up the wall stay in place. There is an S drive seam at the back of the lathe feet you can't see.

Caleb Army_076.JPG Here she is coming back together. It's about time to check alignment and see what she'll do mounted solid instead of on those silly rubber feet. Of course since I don't get much shop time this is more like Project of a Couple of Weeks:thumbsup:
