What Did You Buy Today?

Just a quick update on the 'broomhandle mauser' from this post...

My wife (the teacher) is out of school for spring break this week... so we spent the whole day today junking... at antique shops.

We probably visited 15 different antique shops... the only thing that I bought was an antique broom handle.

It doesn't work, but it is a broom handle.

It is missing some parts, but it is a broom handle.

Besides... how many opportunities do you get to buy antique broom handles, anyway?

Here's the pics...

Hey... it's a broom handle.

I may attempt to repair it... but I'll have to figure out how to get it apart first...

I ordered all the missing parts for this gun... they arrived yesterday. This morning I set about to assemble it and see if it would function. I did get it assembled...

...and it does function, except for one issue. The bolt drags in the receiver enough that the bolt spring will not close the bolt without some help.

So I removed the bolt to see what might be done to resolve this... and that is when I discovered a bigger issue...

Something doesn't look right... the hole should be square...!

On further inspection, I discovered this...

The side of the receiver has been cracked and welded up... poorly...

Just d***...

At this point, I'll just consider this Mauser to be a wallhanger... I doubt it can be repaired well enough to be safe.

Considering that the barrel needs to be relined or replaced also, I think the best plan would be to replace the entire upper if I ever want to make a shooter out of it.

120 lbs. of Rock Island vise just came UPS today. Came from a welding shop and shows little use. Opens & closes & swivels easily. No play or slop in jaws. Used my car lift to put it on a cart until I can fabricate a stand.

When I hear Rock Island, I think "made in the Philippines" for some odd reason... There is a Rock Island in Illinois too, right? Which is it?

Rock Island Manufacturing Company, 1533 1st Street, Rock Island, IL. Building is still standing, with name visible in faded white paint. Foundry was in the rear.
