What Did You Buy Today?

We probably visited 15 different antique shops... the only thing that I bought was an antique broom handle.

It doesn't work, but it is a broom handle.

It is missing some parts, but it is a broom handle.

Besides... how many opportunities do you get to buy antique broom handles, anyway?

I'm no expert on broomhandles. Is that a Chinese "box cannon" or German "broomhandle"? Or maybe Turkish, Spanish, Austrian, or French versions... So many possibilities.

I'm guessing it's German... just based on the German stampings on the lower... but I wouldn't put it past the Chinese to reverse-engineer the German stampings...

I’ve had a few over the years. Have a couple now one complete but apart. One I sold bolt out of like a dummy to a officer I used to work with. Might have to dig out and mess with. Mine don’t look as nice as yours.

Now that I'm home, I can give a better answer...

The lower is stamped 'WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER OBERNDORF A NECKAR' on the right side above the grip. The same is stamped in the area between the barrel and the ejection port on top.

I would think that would qualify it to be German made...

It is not a 'numbers matching' firearm, though... the upper receiver and the lower frame both have the same serial numbers... but the action block has a different number.

After disassembly, I've determined what is missing... the sear, magazine floorplate, magazine spring, magazine follower, and both halves of the handgrip. I've sourced all of these parts and have them on order.

The barrel will have to be relined or replaced... there is no rifling left in it... it actually looks like it has been reamed out at some point...

I'm not sure how much money to throw at this, though... I paid $40 for the pistol, so I think I have some room to work with.

I have been known to throw good money after bad from time to time, though...

Nice find on the broomhandle. I found a Mossberg of some sort at an estate sale, missing the bolt and magazine. Both cost way more than I spent, but a good USA made .22 with wood stock and made of good post-war steel, I feel more than OK with it. Still cheaper than buying one online in any case. Half the fun is putting it back together, anyway.

Barrel not thick enough at muzzle end to reline I’m going to cut barrel off on mine by chamber and profile a 9 mm barrel to match old one either press in or silver solder then chamber. Most where chambered can’t remember 7.62 or 7.65. Have some ammo somewhere. Most don’t have rifling due to corrosive ammo which was loaded hot and fast. Goggle will give you various ways to rebarrel. Then find a factory removable stock.
