What Did You Buy Today?

I took wifey junk store shopping today... the second store we stopped at had a fair amount of old tools. A few of them followed me home.

A Millers Falls corner brace...

This brace may not be something I'll ever use, but it was just too cool to pass up.

A Pexto hand shear...

A Starrett 013½ vise...

And a Keller-Jefferson power hacksaw...

It's missing half of the vise... I don't know if it runs at all, but it was cheap enough to be 'something to tinker with'...

If it takes 12in blades,I have a couple I misordered, mine took 14in.

I scored this Kennedy 526 tool chest for $75 bucks. I like the fact that the original owner's name tag is still on it. Pulling out the drawers for a good cleaning I found the original purchase receipt stuffed in the back. How cool is that? Purchased for $13.63 on 12-27-1963.

Nice score on the box. Things were a lot cheaper back then, but then again Wages were a lot lower. My wife's parents lived in Dublin. Mike

Sorry, the $13.63 was for an MC-28, which is the matching base for a 526 (among others); I have 2: one bought new in 1983 (from Mize Supply, also in Virginia) with a bunch of other boxes at a ridiculously low price (sale plus super % off because they gave me the same deal as the mechanics at the new Hershey plant – I was Process/Mechanical Engineer) and a second that I bought used 2 years ago with a 526. Photos and details in this post on HSM.

However, assuming the 526 was bought at a similar price as the MC-28, it was still a good price, here's what a new MC-28 lists for:

When I looked at the receipt I didn't notice that the $13.63 was for a different Kennedy. However, I was surprised at how much more the Starrett tools were.

The combination square (C434-12-4R) was $30.60, is $481 (factor of 15.7 times increase).
The 24" blade (CB24-4R) was $14.75, is $170 (factor of 11.5 times increase) and more than the Kennedy riser chest.

The Kennedy riser (MC28) was $13.63, is $424.70 (factor of almost 31.4 times increase).

Interesting.

I decide to try my hand at forging. Just getting the bare necessities to try it right now. Hobby (low) level! I just want to see if I can actually make something. Entertainment for an old man. I've got a 40# anvil, propane ,cheap, forge and just ordered some tongs from Home Depot. I had to setup an account to order from HD and saw that they had a 10% discount on a limited selection of items for current & ex-military. So I put my Navy info in to the form and to my surprise was approved in a very short time.
Another surprise was HD's selling of Vevor stuff at the same prices including when Vevor had a sale price on the items. Also "free" shipping. HD isn't carrying what I was looking for in-store. Lowes offers a similar ex / military discount.
HD also sells through military exchanges where no sales tax is applied!
I have my Great Great Grandfathers Coal Forge (Still Functional), his 120# Anvil, Hammers and tongs. I have been threatening to have a go at forging myself...

I wonder if forging coal is widely available? I've got a small, very old forge with a hand crank blower that still works. It was given to me years ago. I've never tried it. Would charcoal briquets work?
