What Did You Buy Today?

Yes but they burn up quicker than coal of course.

I wonder if forging coal is widely available? I've got a small, very old forge with a hand crank blower that still works. It was given to me years ago. I've never tried it. Would charcoal briquets work?
You want "Bituminous coal" which can be had but it isn't cheep. I think charcoal will work but it isn't as high in stored energy and Carbon.

ordered a SINO KA300 glass scale, 1um resolution and 820mm long.
And I said I would report how it goes. The scale arrived pretty quickly, was functional with no pinout issues to the Ditron D80. There is the most amazingly unnecessary and useless collection of brackets and screws...almost literally none of which fit anything, including the angle bracket with slots for adjustment. The spacing is different on each side, and neither matches anything about the reader. A cover was included, but it's one of several styles shown in the downloaded manual, any of which would have been more suitable for my installation. But how would anyone, including me, know.

But most importantly, the scales look well designed and solidly constructed, with accurate dimensional drawings. The KA300 series is pretty bulky and would not be well suited for a lathe cross slide, but they are 1um and can come in 1000mm+ sizes, so they are fine for a lathe Z axis.

The installation is almost complete, so I'll do an accuracy check and report on that also.

I have my Great Great Grandfathers Coal Forge (Still Functional), his 120# Anvil, Hammers and tongs. I have been threatening to have a go at forging myself...
My dad has his grandfathers anvil and hammer. Once I get things set, I'm going to beg him for them. I have a handful of anvils, tongs, hammers, but there is something about the ones that have been in the family. Did pick up a really nice little giant 25lb power hammer last summer. Wasn't the first to respond to the listing, but was the first guy serous enough for the seller to pay attention to. Been watching for one for nearly 15 years now...

Check your local tractor supply. From what I hear they still carry either coal or good quality charcoal for forging. Farrier uses and all...

There is a TS about 25 miles from me that carries coal in 40# bags.
That sounds like a good start.

Rumor has it sometimes their coal can get wet, if the store it outside. Can make it hard to light. Might want to see if the bags feel damp or not. Not sure if a woodworkers moisture meter would work in that stuff.

I have a coal forge also. A buddy picked it up for me, delivered it, then told me about it and the $50 I owed him for it. (It's nice to have good friends... :) )

I still haven't fired it up, although I loaned it to another friend who is a blacksmith for a few days. He used it for a demo at a local historic homestead 'open house'.

My bike trailer came today. Vevor 275# rating. Easily put together, no damage in spite of what the box looked like. Hitch just attaches to the bike axle bolt. 20" wheels. Quick release wheels and sides fold flat for storage. Well thought out.
