What Did You Buy Today?

I went to an estate sale where the family was getting rid of the obsolete equipment and supplies the deceased had been hoarding for at least a half-century. The photos in the ad showed several items that I was interested in, and when I showed up a little early and got into the yard in the first wave, I was disappointed to find that almost all of the good stuff was either gone or marked either NFS or SOLD.

I did get a couple of 2-drawer cabinets with heavy-duty ball bearing slides. They were originally used to store punch tapes for Numerical Control machine tools, 120 plastic cases per drawer.

When empty, each drawer is 36-1/2" wide, 17-1/4" deep, and 4-1/2" tall.

I also found 20 1"x42" 60-grit sanding belts and a Huot No. 826 drill stand for letter drills. I loaned another picker my magnifying glass to examine some wrenches he was interested in. Later, when I asked him if he intended to flip a self-opening die head, he gave it to me! No brand name, just the numbers 601816. It looks very much like a Rubomatic.

Not a bad day for $50.00 out the door!

Bigger bandsaw, 20" throat - early 1980's (?) Rockwell/Delta

$290 (after all fees), at an auction that a friend was bidding in but unfortunately didn't win anything he was after (bridgeports and a few other things), but he still went and picked this up for me. A bit of a drive to go get it, and I was hoping to win something else -- but got to spend the day/evening with some folks I haven't seen in a few years so it was worth the drive.

It's sitting in the trailer outside tonight, should be able to unload it after work tomorrow

Delta 28x3-5, I may see if I can track down a blade welder that fits it -- or if I can adapt the one out of my current bandsaw to fit it. Looks like 50 to 3500 SFPM which is an impressive range, and my biggest complaint about the saw it's replacing (1980's Enco 360). The current saw only goes from 25 or 50 to about 150 or 200 sfpm

Not sure of the year on this.

It takes up a pretty good percentage of the length of my 8' trailer, I hope this can fit through a doorway on my pallet jack otherwise I will need to get... creative.

I'll weigh it when unloading, I'm guessing 750-850 based on specs I can find for approximately this saw plus the motor+variable speed gearbox installed here

I have the same jack. How's the paint job on it? On mine the paint does not seem to be fully cured and leaves blue marks on the floor (and on my hands)

Can you attach a tow bar to the skates? For easy pulling?

Bummer! The paint on mine is cured. I have my lathe on blocks now because I’m giving it a partial overhaul. I tested the jack on it and it worked great. The skates have handles on either sides so I imagine you could connect to them. When I bought mine last week, only the red ones came in a bundle of 4. They have more capacity than I I’ll ever need (famous last words) but the yellow ones have more. They were more expensive so I passed on them. This morning Vevor sent me an add and they had the yellow ones in a set of 4 and $10 cheaper than I paid for the red ones.

Asking before pulling the trigger... What do you guys think? US$235.96, after all discounts applied, for both with free delivery.

Not paying used crazy prices for an old anvil... not for this newbie that will only use it sporadically... This one is an 88lbs anvil. Drop forged steel. US$125.99

Also I priced all the material for making my own forge and for a lot less I can get this one in a couple of days... and it is made out of stainless steel. No sure if that even makes a difference on a forge... US$134.99

I have made multiple gas fired foundry furnaces. Stainless will look better for longer and not rust when sitting in the garage unused. That's not a bad price to get you started. After you see your needs and what you like/dislike you will build your own custom forge that is more durable.
I can't comment on the anvil.

ASO? (Anvil Shaped Object?)

You may want to see if the anvil actually has a hard face, or is cast steel. Supposedly some of the import anvils actually have a good face, but many (most?) are just solid cast iron, which is soft and will have poor recoil or bounce. The iron anvils will damage more easily. That said, for a few weekends of playing around, it may not matter.

My only concern with all of these forges that are made from ceramic wool. You really should cover the wool with something. Some sort of ridigidizer or refractory. The problem is that the ceramic wool fibers are not good to breathe. If the wool is coated properly, it keeps any from blowing out to where you're working.

I ordered an 81pc gage block set,
And a 1.4-6” 2pt digital ID micrometer.
Both from Shars. So quality may not be best but I avoided their cheapest stuff.

Boredom is costly. Boredom while hospitalized is downright expensive.

The anvil is cast steel. I have been watching a few reviews. Looks good enough for a beginner like me.

On the forge, it does come with refractory cement. But I will get some rigidizer as well. Thank you for the recommendation.

Order for everything placed.

So I got the following:

Vevor 88lbs Anvil
VEVOR Propane Forge Portable, Double Burner
Rigidizer
Beginner Blacksmith Assembled Bladesmith Tongs
40oz Forged Steel Hammer - I did not asked for feedback on this.... went with 40oz hammer... maybe I should have gone with 64oz???
Starrett Steel Automatic Center Punch with Adjustable Stroke ( 18C ) - for the life of me, I can't find my center punch... had to get another one to be able to find it...
Pica Lyra Depth Marker - always wanted to get a few of these in different colors... got one of each black, red, and blue
Chicago Latrobe - 69900 157 Series High-Speed Steel Short Length Drill Bit Set with Metal Case - I already have this set in the other house... but need some decent drill bits here in Ocala...
