I’m trying to decide standard 8” Vertex or tilting when the price is within $150 of each other.

Besides weight are there really any other negatives to going with the tilting version as a one and only rotary table?

Honestly I’m not sure. Hopefully some of the older gentlemen will come along with some answers for you. I personally have 2 older tables one is a PALMGREN that has x and y travel and a rotary on top. The other is just a standard 8”

We had them at the tool and die shop and at AAI . They were used but not that often . I bought one from the die shop when it went out of business but never had a need for it at home . Heavy SOB Walters . I remember making extrusion dies for DuPont on one of the large ones . Must have been 500 small holes in circular patterns drilled at different angles and came out in a square pattern on the bottom of the dies . Loved those Deckel Jig Bores . :encourage: Is the Vertex a V/H model ? I think the horizontal/vertical capability would be a better option if not .

Yeah both are H/V models. The tilting would just allow for any angle. It’s 110lbs vs 66lbs and $825 vs $635 though.

I’m just not sure if I really need the tilting ability.

For that matter the non-tilting is a 4-slot while the tilting is a 3-slot so I’m also not sure which would be better.

FWIW I prefer a four-slot table. Just more clamping options.
Think about wrestling that 110lb beast around.

I appreciate your thoughts on slot counts. It appears Vertex has discontinued the 8” 4-slot so if I want one I should get it soon.

The weight is my biggest reason not to get the tilting model as it being 110lbs would get very old very quickly. I just need to figure out the correct way to perform that function without the rotary table having the capability.

I have an 8” import table and it’s definitely heavy. No way would I want one that weighed 110lbs even if it tilted.

If your heads tilts or nods can't see a reason for a tilt model . 4 slots are best . Weight issue on a tilt while young wasn't too much but changes as we age . I had the pair of 10 inch Walters , the non-tilt I kept and it was a bear to lift up 35 years ago . It stayed on the BP along with the vise unless I had to remove it for a large job . At 110 lbs , I hope you have young strong sons . :big grin:

Edit . 38 years ago . getting old sucks .

One other thing , if you use the tilt feature , you lose lots of your Z travel . My original BP had the 6 inch spacer installed so that's something else to consider .
