How about a gauge for setting tool height on center. Found this in a Joe Pieczynski Youtube video:

I reckon, I could make a pretty good DRO out of a digital caliper, works in Imp, and metric, can reset zero anywhere, and very cheap.

You can get the quite cheep single axis scale with a remote readout screen, basically like a repackaged digital calipers scale.

This seller has them up to 60cm
