This may be a dumb question...
How well would Vaseline work for rust prevention?
It is cheap, clear, easy to use & store, and easy to remove; it seems to my inexperienced mind to be perfect for this use.
Mike, vaseline works very well. The only problem is that it can be messy and seems to attract dust and grit. In the same way oil is recommended for lubricating gears beacuse chips and rubbish does not stick to it like it does to grease, waxier or thinner lubricants are better for rust prevention on parts seeing use where metal to metal contact is expected.
I had problems with light rust in my basement shop in South Central Pennsylvania, but controlled it with the addition of a dehumidifier. I also repurposed the HVAC vent that had supplied the Kitchen to dump air through a round diffuser near the center of my space. This helps keep the chill off in the winter, keeps it reasonable cool in the Summer and provides some air circulation.
I also use Zerust Plastabs (strips), capsules and drawer liners for all of my storage containers, drawers, etc. (search "Zerust" on Amazon; you can also go to Zerust - https://www.zerustproducts.com - and compare pricing & shipping). The tabs are thin & dry to the touch and can be tucked in just about anywhere.
