I wonder if I made a mistake here. I have a flood coolant system, & I use Mobilmet 766 which is “Neat Cutting Fluid”. It is an oil CF.

I had 2 1/2 gallons of new Mobil Light Hydraulic Oil which I wouldn’t have needed for at least a year, & really no place to store it. I added all 2 1/2 gallons into 5 gallons of the Mobilmet 766.

Does anybody think that this is fine or a problem? My flood coolant system performs the same, and there is still plenty of space left in the reservoir.

Here are the two things that I mixed:

It will cut down the overall sulfur content, but probably not the end of the world. What ever happened with your gearbox leak? Mike

Over at "Bob is the Oil Guy" you can find a formula to calculate the resulting viscosity (if you want to know)
And you can average the "additive" packages based on volume to get a good idea as to the resulting additive package (if you want to know)

Overall: it is safe, it is not going to be as good a cutting oil, nor will it be as good a hydraulic oil.

All good on the low gear oil in my headstock. I added 1 quart, and the level has not gone down after 5 days of daily use.

I have found that hydraulic oil does not make very good cutting oil, as compared to cool tool or that black stuff for threading plumbing pipe. But, it is better than nothing. I got a bunch of it for free. It is also not that good at keeping steel from rusting. I use a little in the oilers on my spindle bearing, but it will take forever to use much.
