No doesn't have to be 5/8". 5/8" is what I had on hand.
I just bought this. The outside profile is very loose as to dimensions. can be .005 over or undersized. I used a 5/8' rougher/finisher and the finish was acceptable. So I just bought this off ebay. A rougher/finisher keeps me from having to finish the profile with another tool which cuts machine wear and tear.
