Long march to a better face mill

To reduce clatter using face mills use the tangential approach method where the teeth engage gradually onto the workpiece. An extreme example is shown here with thin 1/4" steel plate protruding 3" above the vice jaws and a 1/4" cut with a 6" face mill without chatter.

The issues I had were hammering and not chatter. I do often set my parts to one side of the cutter to change the pressure angle.

Clatter is a generic UK term that describes all sorts of unwanted noises.
