I finally caught ebay screwing people over on shipping costs

I ran into this one yesterday, shipping a surface grinder for $32.39? I assume it is an error on the seller's behalf ...
The seller seems pretty new to ebay. He only has 7 feedback rating. He doesn't understand local pickup, and doesn't know ebay will remove his contact number in his listing and block him from sending his number in a message to a buyer.

Ebay gives sellers the option to charge customers retail rates, or the discounted rate through Ebay, you pay the discounted rate when you purchase a shipping label through them, and could be the reason for the difference. I haven’t seen that much of a difference in anything I listed, but it was significant on some items. You need to select which method you want to use for your listings in your profile, it can have a big impact on the shipping costs displayed in your listing.

Here are my shipping options. Can you show me where I can select the discounted rate?

If/when I sell on the bay , I figure out shipping thru pirate ship and that's what I charge . How does the bay calculate their shipping ? Seems like a rip off to me after taking 15% of everything .
I also use pirate ship. Great service. Gives me a discount and the yearly total I've spent on shipping. At present it's $3653 for the year to date

It's in your account settings, not the listing.

Click on your name in the top left corner, select Account Settings, scroll down towards the bottom to shipping preference. That will bring up the screen below. The crappy red arrow is the line you want to check. Your choices are use Ebay discounted rates, custom discounted rates, or standard rates. I use the Ebay discounted rate, but if you have a better discount, you can add that discount to the standard rates so that your buyers see your discount. Whatever you select will apply to all of your listings.

I went thru some issues with usps a couple months ago when they destroyed the package . It took over 4 months for them to pay out $1200 . Pirate Ship takes a couple days according to my son . Besides being 30-40% cheaper , they pay out easily when needed . I choose the box size and weigh it , that simple .

You should be getting the discount rates on all your listings with those settings. I can’t explain why they would charge your customer twice what the discount rate should be (your price). Is it possible for your customers to order three day select, or two day shipping? That might cause the customer price to be so high, but if it defaulted to ground when you went into the shipping screen, that might explain it.

Since you are using Pirate Ship, if you know how much of a discount that is from the UPS standard rates, you could add that into the custom selection. It would be interesting to see what they are charging for standard UPS rates and compare to what it would be if you created a label on the UPS site.

No not possible for 3 day shipping. Here is the listing, and it gave me a shipping cost to myself. Curious what others see as their shipping cost.

$48.42 to Md .

This was to Forestville, NY

I’m getting $48.42 to CT.

I was curious how much cheaper the the Ebay rates are compared to retail rates, so I calculated a shipment on the UPS site of your listing to me here in CT and got $84.08. Even though you had the discounted rates selected, it looks like they charged the customer standard rates. That is strange since it seems to be working properly for us now.

My first thought was some sort of fraud, but your explanation seems more plausible given ebay's enforcement/policies.
