If it was originally a threaded hole with a set screw (it looks like it was)... the set screw served two functions. First, it kept the gear from spinning on the shaft, and second, it kept the gear from sliding off the end of the shaft.
If it was replaced with a pin, the pin will keep it from turning on the shaft, but will still allow the gear to work it's way off the shaft. I would think that being mated to a worm might tend to cause this to be more likely.
It may never work off... or it may every time it's used. I'd try it as-is, but would be thinking about 'plan B'...
