Hi I have a Vertex BS1 dividing head, the problem I keep getting when INDIRECT indexing is I always end up with an extra thick tooth at the end
but when I cut a gear by DIRECT indexing I get a perfect gear, I have checked that I have the correct: cutter, size blank, and I am using the ( according the information I have ) size hole plate and the correct number of turns IE: to cut a Mod 1 26T gear I am using a 28mm blank 39 hole circle 1 turn + 21 holes tooth cutting depth 2.25mm

What am i doing wrong ?

Any help would be appreciated

Regards Bob

My hunch is your information is wrong- can you post it?
Also puzzling is that the direct indexing plate usually has 24 notches

Here is my experience with solving a problem with a dividing plate. Make sure the dividing plate is not only labeled correctly, but made correctly.

Another possibility is just one of counting. Are you counting the hole you started from? (you shouldn't). Do you count the hole you finish on (you should). Are you using the dividers? Are they stiff enough to preserve position as you move them?

Hi Gene, thanks for your reply I was counting the hole I'm starting from, I will go into the workshop in the morning and try again and try as you
suggest, fingers crossed it works I have to many scrap gears in the bin and I am starting to lose hart, I even went to the point of stripping the Vertex indexing head cleaning it all out and inspecting the internal gears and bearings plus re-greasing and taking out any backlash

Again thanks for advice

Don't be disheartened, this is a skill which you have to master and it takes time.

Hi Mark, thanks for your reply
The gear that I cut buy direct indexing was indeed 24T, sorry I did not make that clear in my post
It might seem that it is me not counting the holes on the dividing plate correctly, I am in the workshop in the morning with high hopes
(my scrap bin is getting full of my failures )

I've done that before, practice makes perfect...
