er40 collet chuck

Or, like many BP style drawbars, they are drilled and spring-pinned instead of weld. The weld on 4140 can get very hard and brittle. Not what you want for a drawbar. Unless you are prepared to go the whole way: Preheat, weld, post heat. Then possibly anneal, then quench and temper to get the strength back.

what i thought about was getting a short piece and welding into a piece of pipe then screw it into the chuck snug then backing it out about a inch then slide me a collar on it then weld the collar and add me a wheel:biggrin:

It's more common, and probably easier to turn up a collar with an OD that fits the back of the spindle with about 0.010 clearance, with a flange on it for the "nut" to bear against, then slide it up the full length of the threaded rod. Then pin the nut to the all thread. You could get a coupling nut for the additional length it would provide. Be a little stronger also, with more thread engaged. There's no need to fit the entire length of the rod closely inside the spindle If you think you'd have trouble aligning the collet holder and the drawbar, you could make a short threaded collar that fit inside the spindle to keep it more or less centered. Have it just above where the drawbar went into the collet holder. Just make sure the spindle is the same ID all the way.

my spindle is a mt4 so the id does change but i see what your talking about though and that is a better idea. thanks Tony. will have a go at it
