Emco Super 11

Update on your lathe?
well i found a leadscrew.. waiting to hear back from the big shop.. was hoping the change gears were in the locked cabinet.. i got it open this morning.. they were not in there.. Looking at taking the motor down the the local amature shop and see if i can get 220v 3 phase on this motor.. if not.. then maybe order a 220v three phase, tap the 220v single phase that goes to the dryer.. (since only one or the other would be running at a time).. and run that into a VFD for the 220v 3 phase for the machine. It's a thought.. that or go 110v motor.. nothing in the manual saying about 220v single phase.. but i guess it would work with the right motor..

Ok.. got it off the stand that it was on.. and onto the tool box for now..

I owned that Super 11 lathe prior to getting my PM-1340GT. Very nice machine, but I hated the motor on it - kinda like it was a part from a sewing machine. Glad you're dealing with that aspect.

I don't know what the motors are like on the older Super 11's but mine is smooth and consistent. I like that it is 2-speed, too. On the other hand, 3 ph motors with VFD's are said to be even smoother and produce better finishes so different characteristics, maybe? VS on a lathe is nice but you're still tied to the gearing so I don't think VS is the real advantage; all the other stuff like braking and stopping when threading would seem to be the real advantages.

My Sherline has VS and variable feed so I can dial in a cut on the fly. One day, I have to see if I can set this up on the Super 11.

What did you hate about the motor?
My machine was pretty old, and the motor was not in the best condition. It made terrible noise, and I felt it was totally underpowered for that machine. Like I said - something from a sewing machine. To be fair I spent zero time diagnosing or improving the motor setup. The one Stefan Gotteswinter has on his Super 11 sounds very sweet in his videos - nothing like mine.
