The DMV is a perfect case for automation. The people behind the desk are rude and basically robots already. They function under a strict set of operating directives with unyielding refusal to exercise human judgement. You know, like a computer.
"Sorry, 'sir,' your safety inspection is dated 32 days ago and the rules clearly state that a safety inspection can be no older than 31 days. You'll have to go get another safety inspection." Yes, you're correct C-3PO, the rules do clearly state that, but a touchscreen kiosk could have delivered the bad news for a fraction of the price I'm paying you, and could have done it without all the sass.
If we are going to automate everyone out of a job, why did we start with all the hard working people in factories and leave these crass napoleonic law enforcement wannabes alone? We need to keep humans in roles that require executive function, decision making, roles that require human judgement. Which is what a DMV employee should be, but they aren't, so why are we paying them?
